Correctional Services Department Undertakes Recruitment Drive

The Full Story

The Department of Correctional Services is undertaking an island-wide recruitment drive as the Department seeks to satisfy the need for at least 200 more correctional officers.
“We are hoping that all persons, who believe they have the necessary requisites will attend these recruitment centres,” said Aileen Wolfe-Stephens, Deputy Commissioner with responsibility for Human Resource Management and Community Services.
According to Mrs. Wolfe-Stephens, “we definitely have the need for new persons to increase our staff capacity due to the expansion of the roles and functions of the correctional officers”. Currently, there are about 2,000 correctional officers.
A two-day recruitment exercise got underway today (April 9) at the Montpelier Training Camp in St. James, while another exercise will be held at the Denbigh Showground in Clarendon on April 17 and 18. The final exercise will be held in the Corporate Area at 49-51 Dunrobin Avenue, Kingston from April 29 to May 1.
“We are trying to identify the best suited persons to become correctional officers and even though we have mentioned these particular parishes, it doesn’t exempt persons from attending any of the recruitment centres wherever they are in Jamaica,” Mrs. Wolfe-Stephens said.
Persons wishing to become correctional officers must be between the ages of 18 and 35; be no less than five feet, five inches tall; must be immunized, and have no body piercing or tattoos.
“In terms of qualifications, they must have at least one CXC or GCE or a vocational skill training certificate. They are expected to be physically fit without any disabilities,” Mrs. Wolfe-Stephens informed.
Persons are selected after successful completion of an entrance examination, medical screening and fingerprinting. The selected persons will then be trained and placed in correctional institutions island-wide by September of this year.
The recruitment drive is being done in conjunction with the Office of the Services Commission.
