Consul General to New York Says Thanks

Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Dr. Basil K. Bryan, has expressed gratitude to contributors to the Consulate’s Hurricane Ivan relief fund and persons who helped to mobilise emergency supplies for the relief effort.
In a letter posted on the Consulate General’s website, Dr. Bryan expressed his sincere thanks to those who came forward to help the country and their fellow Jamaicans in a time of great need.
“On behalf of the government and people of Jamaica, and indeed the Jamaican community here in the New York metro area, I am writing to express sincere thanks to you with respect to the mobilisation of hurricane relief items for Jamaica,” the letter said in part.
For those individuals, organisations and businesses that contributed cash and kind, the Consul General noted that, “the assistance is truly appreciated and will impact positively on the lives of those affected by Hurricane Ivan,” which swept through Jamaica and parts of the Caribbean region with deadly force in early September last year.
Referring to those who gave of their time, expertise and resources, Dr. Bryan said that such a collective action made a big difference.
“The fact that we were able to work together to extend a helping hand in this moment of great need, is a lesson in the importance of collective action,” he wrote to members of the Hurricane Ivan Relief Task Force.
Working in conjunction with the office of the Mayor of New York City, several firehouses around the city offered their premises as drop-off centres from where volunteers could shuttle the items to the shipping companies.
According to Dr. Bryan, the Hurricane Ivan Relief Fund had already disbursed over $50,000 to the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR) in Kingston, and that the reconstruction effort was well on the way.
