Consul General Issues Challenge to Build a Better Jamaican Society

Consul General of Jamaica to New York, Dr. Basil K. Bryan, has challenged Jamaicans in the Diaspora to become involved in the building of a strong and productive Jamaica of which all could be proud. Dr. Bryan’s challenge was made during his keynote address to members of the Jamaica Ex-Police Association-USA at the organization’s 14th Anniversary Banquet in East Hartford, Connecticut, on Saturday, May 14.
The Consul General took the opportunity to update an appreciative audience of Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica about the many new activities being undertaken in the island in addition to initiatives fostering social and economic development.
He listed the initiatives including major highway construction along the North Coast from Negril, Highway 2000, investments in the tourism industry as well as the development of the Harmony Cove Resort in Trelawny.
Dr. Bryan also spoke about the Cricket World Cup 2007, pointing out that Jamaica was hosting the opening ceremony as well as several matches in the first and second rounds. He challenged the audience to continue their advocacy on behalf of Jamaica and to actively support the country’s development agenda.
“Jamaicans are a strong and resourceful people and we must continue to lead the way in creating a better society. I encourage you to become part of this process and to continue your efforts in building a strong and productive Jamaica of which we can all be proud,” he said.
The Consul General commended the Association on supporting the educational process in Jamaica and its desire to be included in programmes that would better prepare young Jamaicans for an increasingly dynamic and diverse global market place.
The Ex-Police Association whose membership is drawn from former members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), places emphasis on assisting educational efforts in Jamaica as well as in the Hartford area.
In addition, it has over the years provided assistance to the JCF and has organized several outreach initiatives directed at both young and second generation Jamaicans residing in the region. The function was attended by members of other Jamaica Ex-Police Associations from New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Miami.
