Condolence Book Opens in NY for McKenley

A condolence book for the late sports icon, Herb McKenley, was opened today (December 4), at the Jamaican Consulate General in New York.
Mr. McKenley, who was awarded the Order of Merit in 2004, died on November 26 at age 85. He will be given an official funeral on Saturday (December 8), at the National Arena, after which he will be buried in National Heroes Park.
Acting Consul General, Lincoln Downer opened the book in the third floor lobby at the Consulate, invited the community, “not just Jamaicans but those who have been influenced in some way by this outstanding and extraordinary individual,” to take a moment to pay their respect.
In offering condolences to the immediate and extended families, Mr. Downer said that the nation has lost an icon whose contribution to national development was unparalleled.
“On behalf of the Consulate General of Jamaica in New York and the Jamaican community, I would like to offer sincere condolences to Hon. Herb McKenley’s wife and extended family,” he said.
“Jamaica has lost an icon. It is largely through his outstanding performances in both the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympic Games that Jamaica is renowned for its athletic prowess. His contribution to the development of Track & Field athletics, especially at the junior level, was unparalleled,” he added.
Last weekend the Calabar High School Alumni Association of New York used the occasion of its Alumni Fund-raiser at the Flowers Physical Therapy Building, Queens, to unveil two portraits in honour of Mr. McKenley, who was a past student of Calabar.
“His life was one of dignity, nobility and above all, humility. He demonstrated an alacrity of mind and purpose and his vision was to make everyone better. Without any doubt, he has left an indelible mark,” said Dr. Donald C. Phillibert, Director of Gynaecology, Metropolitan Hospital Centre, and President of the Association.
The book will remain open until Friday, December 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
