Community Groups Honoured for Contribution to Education

Region Four of the Ministry of Education and Youth has awarded three community groups, Tryall Trust Fund in Hanover; Negril Education Environment Trust in Westmoreland, and Kiwanis Club of Providence in St. James, for outstanding support and contribution to education throughout the region.
Citations and plaques were presented to the groups at an awards ceremony, which was held at the Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort in Montego Bay on August 29.
According to the Director in Region Four, Vincent Guthrie, the external stakeholders have been singled out for awards, because they “have distinguished themselves in support of education throughout the region.”
“This marks the second year that this initiative has been undertaken. The idea came out of the consideration that whilst the Ministry of Education has always encouraged participation in education and whereas we have always been the recipient of boundless generosity from our stakeholders, we of this region thought it necessary to institute a situation in which we can say public thanks to selected persons or organizations throughout the region in a special way,”Mr. Guthrie added.
The parishes of St. James, Hanover and Westmoreland comprise Region Four.
In his address, Principal Director of Entertainment and Culture in the Ministry of Tourism, Sydney Bartley, said the ceremony was timely as it marked the celebration of those who have contributed towards the enhancement of the education of many persons.
“I am happy to be here to share in this very important occasion, when we not only come together to celebrate each other but to celebrate those who have contributed as external stakeholders. This is very important, as it gives us a sense of understanding of how we go through the struggles and to reflect on the way forward as it relates to ‘back to school’. Let us then seek to believe more in ourselves and to honour our ancestors for the foundations they have all laid for us,” Mr. Bartley stressed. He urged teachers and principals to ensure that as they plan for the new school year, that the vision they have for their schools, “is the vision they have for the country.”
