September 16, 2004

The Full Story

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Don McKinnon, has called on members of the Commonwealth family and international organisations to assist Caribbean states devastated by Hurricane Ivan.
Mr. McKinnon, who expressed his sorrow over the lives that have been lost and the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ivan in parts of the Caribbean, particularly Grenada and Jamaica, said the Commonwealth was particularly concerned about the impact of national disasters on small member states.
“I have been closely monitoring the various reports on the destruction Hurricane Ivan has caused in countries, including Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and especially Grenada. I am also concerned about Jamaica. Natural disasters of this magnitude and the devastation they cause in our small member states have always been a major concern of the Commonwealth family,” he said. “My prayers and thoughts are with the people of all the affected states at this difficult time,” the Secretary-General said.
