A Joint Select Committee of Parliament has been established to consider and report on the Criminal Justice (Suppression of Criminal Organisations) Act 2013.

Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting, made the announcement during the sitting of the House of Representatives on July 2.

He noted that the creation of a Committee was “a condition of Cabinet when it approved the tabling of the Bill.” The legislation was tabled on Tuesday, June 25 by the Security Minister.

The Bill makes provision for the disruption and suppression of criminal organisations and creates offences, in order to restore a sense of security in the Jamaican society and strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies to deal with crime effectively.

The Committee, which will be chaired by Mr. Bunting, includes the following: Members of Parliament: Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna; Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, Hon. Damion Crawford; Richard Parchment; Joylan Silvera; Delroy Chuck and Olivia Grange.

The Senate will announce its members on Friday, July 5.
