Claverty Cottage Shelter Closed

October 1, 2010

The Full Story

Claverty Cottage Primary School, which was activated as a shelter for displaced persons, is now closed, says Portland Disaster Co-ordinator, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Denise Lewis.
Speaking in an interview with JIS News, Ms. Lewis said the school housed seven persons on (September 29) who needed refuge, adding that they have now returned home.
As it relates to damage, Ms. Lewis said that in the Claverty Cottage area, strong wind resulted in damaged roofs. She said that there have not been any reports of flooding or landslides noting, however that information is sketchy due to the lack of electricity in most areas of the parish.
She added that in the Spring Hill area of Buff Bay, the road has been damaged, but a team from the National Works Agency (NWA) has been dispatched in the area.
Ms. Lewis said that in the Rio Grande area, there have also been reports of fallen trees, especially banana trees.
