Clarendon Wins ‘Jamaica 55’ Best Decorated Town Square Competition

The parish of Clarendon is the winner of the Jamaica 55 ‘Spirit of Independence’ Best Decorated Town Square competition.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, presented the award to the Mayor of Clarendon, Councillor Winston Maragh; and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation, Rohan Blake, during the Council’s meeting on Thursday (May 10).
The promotion was part of last year’s Independence and Emancipation celebrations under the theme ‘Celebrating Jamaicans at Home and Abroad’.

Businesses and government agencies were invited to display their  ‘Spirit of Independence’ by decorating their offices using the national colours and the ‘Jamaica 55’ Fashion theme of  black, green, gold and red in combination with their company colours.
.           “We also encouraged parish councils to decorate the town squares, and media houses to broadcast and print special content promoting Emancipation and Independence. All of our entrants answered that call, with the winners stopping short of nothing to ensure that their various publics were engulfed in the Independence spirit with every interaction,” Mr. Terrelonge said in making the presentation of a plaque to the Council.
Each council was also encouraged to use props and decorative material that would draw the attention of the public.

The competition was extended to government and private-sector entities, stores, offices and business plazas. Criteria for judging included creativity, neatness, appeal and use of the theme.

Newly elected Councillor, Tanya Lee Williams. was also sworn in at the meeting.
