Christians in St. Mary Pray for Healing of Nation

June 8, 2005

The Full Story

Special prayers invoking divine intervention to solve the country’s spiralling crime wave, were offered during a special ecumenical service held in Port Maria, St. Mary last Sunday.
The service, which was organized by the Jamaica Youth for Christ in association with the St. Mary Ministers’ Fraternal, was held under the theme: ‘Bless our nation – direct moments of prayer and spiritual renewal’.
Rev. Kermit Jones, President of the St. Mary Minister’s Fraternal, presided over the event, which included the presentation of a peace torch to Custos of St. Mary, A.A “Bobby” Pottinger and the reading of the Herald Address, which was delivered by Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Howard Cooke, at the national day of prayer service held on May 15 at National Heroes Park.
The ceremony is part of a series being held across the island and will culminate with a national ecumenical service at Emancipation Park on Sunday, August 14.
Crusades have already been held in St. Thomas and Portland, and will continue in St. Ann on Sunday, June 12, following the completion of the St. Mary leg on Saturday, June 11.
In his homily, Rev. Jones made a passionate appeal to the people of St. Mary to make a special effort to ensure the success of the national initiative.
He noted that the high crime rate was placing the country on a destructive path and exhorted residents to give God the opportunity to put an end to the problem.
Mr. Pottinger, in his remarks, noted that the high level of support for the crusade represented the strong determination by citizens to save the nation from destruction. He urged all well-thinking citizens to give the programme their full support in order to bring back civility and love to the nation, adding that with the commitment of all Jamaicans, it would not be too difficult to achieve the desirable changes. The Custos further called for the message to be taken into the homes, in order to develop the proper attitudes and values among children.
Basil Sutherland, Coordinator of the Jamaica Youth for Christ Bless the Nation Project, told JIS News that he was pleased with the success of the project so far and thanked the citizens and the various church organizations across the island for supporting the initiative.
