The Full Story

More than 100 persons, many of them children, are expected to participate in the national project for Child Month’s Action Day on May 18, which will entail constructing an access ramp to the 3D Projects’ office in Morant Bay, St. Thomas.
Lily Roberts, Chairman of the Action Day Planning Committee of the National Child Month Committee (NCMC), told JIS News that this year, focus is being placed on projects that will assist at risk children and senior citizens.
She noted that 3D Projects, which recently moved into a new building at 8 Miramar Road, was selected as the national project, because of the urgent need for wheelchair access to the facility.
“We are going to landscape the compound so that the children and wheelchair users can get to the building for medical care and other services and we will resurface a rectangular area that we can erect a tent and use it as a multipurpose area,” she informed.
Activities will get underway with an opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. and a number of officials are expected to be in attendance including Minister of State for Labour and Social Security, Senator Floyd Morris, and Children’s Advocate, Mary Clarke.
A Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), 3D Projects is dedicated to the development of persons with disabilities and “it is a place where they can come and access medical treatment among other services offered such as skills training,” Ms. Roberts explained. The organization, which is headquartered in St. Catherine, operates out of five parishes.
In addition to the national project, Ms. Roberts is encouraging children across Jamaica to get involved in projects in their schools and community especially an activity that will help children, who are at risk. Over the years, Action Day has emerged as the children’s version of Labour Day.
