Celebrity Golf Classic to Benefit Primary Education

Two California-based companies with strong Jamaican ties have come together to stage a Caribbean celebrity golf classic from June 23 to 25, with the proceeds to go towards the advancement of primary education in Jamaica.
The event, which will be held at Ritz Carlton Golf & Spa Resort in Rose Hall, is expected to attract a lot of star power from the United States and the Caribbean. Among the invitees are former Jamaican and West Indies cricketers Robert Haynes, Maurice Foster, Jeffrey Dujon, Courtney Walsh and Michael Holding; actors Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter, Richard Roundtree, Chris Spencer, and actor/comedian Steve Harvey and golfing instructor Robert Baker.
Richard Stephenson of RISARC Consulting, one of the organizers, told JIS News that receipts from the tournament would be used to establish computer laboratories in elementary schools throughout the island, as well as to refurbish and upgrade existing labs in a number of institutions to bring them up to acceptable levels.
According to him, “the objective is to focus resources on preparing a new generation of leaders by building a platform for leadership development and innovative project initiatives.”
The celebrity golf tournament, expected to be one of the biggest outside of the United States, is being held to coincide with the annual convention of the National Association of Jamaican and Supportive Organizations (NAJASO).
The three-day summit of business leaders and heads of community organizations from the United States, Bermuda and Jamaica, which will be held at the Half Moon Resort in Rose Hall, will focus on a range of issues including trade and investment opportunities, medical and educational aid and disaster relief and management in Jamaica.
Convention chair, Earl Mitchell called the golf tournament “an exciting addition” to the Montego Bay summit.
B. Roy Davidson of Universal Health and tournament co-chair, opined that the event, “will provide the perfect opportunity for golfers to network, improve their skills and provide visibility for their companies.”
