The Information Technology (IT) programme at the Carron Hall High School in St. Mary has received a major boost, with the presentation of six computers to that institution by the Jamaica Awareness Association of California on June 18.
This Association comprises a group of Jamaicans residing in California in the United States, who have formed themselves into an organization which regularly embarks on philanthropic ventures in Jamaica.
The presentation, which marked the official adoption of the school by the organization, was made by its President, Yasmin Facey, during a function held at the school and attended by Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government in the Office of the Prime Minister, Robert Montague and members of the association.
The computers, valued at approximately US$6,000, were procured with money gained from various fund raising ventures organized by the association.
A Motorola C6 Modem was also handed over to the school by Cable and Wireless to facilitate the provision of internet service for the school’s IT programme.
In her address, Mrs. Facey gave an overview of the work done by the organization over the years, and noted that its involvement in St. Mary also included the provision of medical and dental services in several communities.
She pointed out that the Association was committed to helping the Carron Hall High School to procure the materials it needed to provide quality education for its students.
Mr. Montague welcomed members of the association and thanked them for their kind gesture in providing the computers for the school.
He exhorted the staff and students to make the best use of the computers, and encouraged them to develop an outreach programme that would also enable members of the wider community to benefit from IT training being offered at the institution.
Accepting the gift on behalf of the school, Principal, Dotlyn Dawes thanked the association for the assistance it has given, and expressed confidence that adopting the school would help to ensure that it provided quality education for its students.
