Caribbean Consumer Council Elects New Executive

Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC), Mrs. Dolsie Allen, was elected President of the Caribbean Consumer Council (CCC) at the second Biennial General Meeting held on June 22, 2009 in Antigua & Barbuda.
“I am excited about this opportunity to serve as head of this advocacy body and look forward to working with other members of the executive, as together we seek to strengthen the various consumer protection organisations in the region, and lobby for changes that will redound to the benefit of consumers. We have been vested with the responsibility to advocate, influence, protect, defend and harmonise our efforts to the benefit of all Caribbean peoples,” Mrs. Allen said. Incumbent members of the executive are drawn from St. Lucia, Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda, and St. Kitts.
The new executive consists of the following persons:. Mr. Philip McLauren of St. Lucia, the immediate past president, who has been elected 1st Vice President . Mr. Andrew Antoine of St. Lucia, 2nd Vice President . Mr. Hubert James of St. Lucia, Treasurer . Ms. Hildred Simpson of Antigua and Barbuda, Secretary . Mr. Malcolm Gibbs-Taitt of Barbados, Public Relations Officer . Mr. Howard Richardson of St. Kitts & Nevis, Assistant to the Secretary and Treasurer All officers will serve for a two-year term according to the constitution of the CCC.
Both the Second Biennial General Meeting and the Seventh Caribbean Consumer Conference which followed, were held under the theme ‘The Resilience of the Consumer Movement in the Midst of Global Food, Energy and Credit Crises – Building Partnerships and Co-operation’. The objectives included designing implementation strategies for the plan of action to guide members through the current global recession as well as developing strategies aimed at expediting and increasing the harmonisation of consumer protection policies throughout the region.
The new executive of the CCC is committed to intensifying its lobby for policy interventions, aimed at alleviating the impact of the economic crisis through increased protection of the food, fuel and financial resources in the Caribbean. The CCC has also reaffirmed its intentions to advocate for the inclusion of consumer protection provisions in trade agreements throughout the Caribbean Community.
The conference was supported by several organisations including Consumer International, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 14 Caricom member countries. The Government of Antigua & Barbuda and the US FTC sponsored the four-day workshop and discussions.
