Cancer Society Continues Fundraising Drive

September 25, 2012

The Full Story

The Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) continues its fundraising drive today (Sept. 25), with the premier of the movie: The Odd Life of Timothy Green, at the Palace Cineplex, Sovereign Centre.

The event gets underway with cocktails at 7:30 p.m. The cost of regular seats is $1,500 and $2,000 for box seats, and tickets are available at the JCS office located at 16 Lady Musgrave Road, St. Andrew.

The movie premier is part of efforts by the organisation to raise $30 million to purchase a new mobile mammography unit, which will enable the organisation to more effectively carry out its screening and outreach services in underserved communities across the island.

Executive Director of the JCS, Yulit Gordon, told JIS News that the existing unit, which was a gift from the Scotiabank Foundation in 2001, has reached the end of its product life cycle and will become dysfunctional by year-end.

A number of fundraising activities have been undertaken, including a 'Tree of Hope' initiative, launched in May.

Up to August, some $15 million had been raised, and the organisation is calling on local and international donors to continue to support the effort, which will allow the JCS to reach more at-risk women.

The organisation will be staging its annual Keeping Abreast Luncheon on October 25 at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston. Tickets for this event can be purchased at any of the society’s locations in Kingston, St. Ann or St. Elizabeth at a cost of $4,000 per person.

Donations can also be made to account number 241-639-207 at the National Commercial Bank (NCB), and to account 800-472 at the Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica.

Tree of Hope targets corporate donors, through contact with various companies, and individual donors, through the sale of cards.

Persons are encouraged to purchase cards in celebration of family members, who have survived cancer, or in memory of those who have lost the battle with the disease.

The JCS is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, which was formed in 1955. The society is engaged in activities for the prevention and control of cancer in Jamaica.
