High Commissioner to Canada, Evadne Coye has expressed sorrow at the passing of sports giant, the Hon. Herb McKenley, OM.
“The Jamaica High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, wishes to extend its deepest sympathy to Mr. McKenley’s wife and family on the passing of this legendary Jamaican, whose contribution has made an indelible mark on the lives of so many. The country is indeed the poorer for his passing,” she stated.
She noted that the sports hero “was truly one of Jamaica’s finest sons, who gave selfless and dedicated service to his country, particularly in the field of athletics.”
“His distinguished record as shown by the number of Olympic medals earned for athletics, has undoubtedly proven to be an inspiration to the many young athletes who have benefited from his coaching,” the High Commissioner stated, noting that Mr. McKenley’s efforts in encouraging Jamaican athletes will always be remembered.
“May his soul rest in peace,” she added.In the meantime, a condolence book has been opened at the High Commission in Ottawa for Jamaicans and others to pay their respects to the late Jamaican sports legend, Herb McKenley. The condolence book will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Hon. Herb McKenley died on Monday, November 26 at the age of 85. He will be accorded an official funeral on Saturday, December 8, at the National Arena, with interment to follow in the National Heroes Park.
