The Full Story

More than 230,000 passengers have flown with Air Jamaica since the airline resumed flying between Jamaica and Canada in April 2004.
Air Jamaica’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, George de Mercado, revealed this figure recently at the Air Jamaica annual travel agents awards luncheon, held in Toronto, Canada, to recognize outstanding sales performance by Canadian travel agencies in 2006.
In 2004 when Air Jamaica resumed daily service between Canada and Jamaica, after being absent from the Canadian airspace for 14 years, the airline moved a total of 47,677 passengers.
“In 2005 the number moved to 73,203; in 2006 it increased to 82,212; and up to the end of April this year, the number of passengers on Air Jamaica reached 31,215, which represents a 40 per cent increase over the similar period last year,” stated Mr. de Mercado.
“We are here to honour the travel agents who, through thick and thin, have stayed with us and have helped us to achieve this success,” he added.
A total of 12 travel agencies received awards for generating sales from Can$250,000 to over Can$2 million.
CanAg Travel was the sole winner in the Two Million Dollar Club, having generated over Can$2 million in sales, while six companies made it to the One Million Dollar Club with sales between Can$1 million and Can$2 million. They are Travel Kiosk, Royal Travel, Business & Vacation Travel, SkyRoute Travel, Celestial Travel and Finton Travel.
The Platinum Award was presented to Mirabel Travel, for generating sales between Can$500,000 to Can$1 million, while the Gold Award was presented to Sun-Ray Travel for sales between Can$300,000 and Can$500,000. Three companies – Distinguished Travel, Bayview Travel and the Professional Travel Place – shared the Silver Award for sales between Can$250,00 and Can$300,000.
Mr. de Mercado also acknowledged the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) office in Canada, under the leadership of Sandra Scott, noting that the agency’s hard work in selling Jamaica also helped to make Air Jamaica successful.
Norma Sale, Air Jamaica’s Manager in Canada, congratulated the awardees, and noted that the success of the travel route depended on them and that the awards were the airline’s way of recognizing “those who support us day in and day out.”
Jamaica’s Consul General to Toronto, Anne-Marie Bonner, presented an Award of Excellence to Air Jamaica employee Herman Wedemire, for outstanding contribution and dedication to the Air Jamaica sales office.
