Camperdown Students Exposed to Career Opportunities

Approximately 800 students of Camperdown High School in Kingston were exposed to a variety of career opportunities and information from a number of organizations, including the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), during their annual Career Day and Exposition, held at the school on March 17.
Guidance Counsellor of the institution, Reverend Patrick Dunkley, explained that the event was staged to provide the students with an impetus to career counselling.
“Today we are adding some impetus to career counselling and bringing some visual aids and information to the children about possible career paths that they could embark on. The objective is really to broaden their horizons and for them to identify places they can approach for information and possible opportunities,” he explained to JIS News, noting that while upper school students participated, the Career Day primarily targeted grade nine students.
“We have a number of students coming from the different grades, but today in particular, we are using the opportunity to enlighten the grade nine students about their career direction,” he added.
Business Development Officer at Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS), Miss Titania Meredith, said it was interesting to see the level of interest the students displayed in all the booths.

She further pointed out that the students with whom she interacted were not only interested in obtaining information on how to enter the financial sector, but they were enquiring about VMBS’ different saving products.
One of the many third formers who participated in the Career Day, Renee Richards, could not hide her excitement as she got information on banking, one of her career choices.
“I think Career Day is fantastic and I learnt a lot of things..since I am interested in banking and accounting, I got a lot of information. I have an idea of what I can do right now,” she said.
Career Development Officer at HEART Trust/ NTA, Miss Michelle Thompson, said the event was beneficial to her.
“At least 10 students would have gotten information that is beneficial to them, so it was good.we offered brochures on course offerings and different topics to enhance their career choices,” she added.
The JIS representatives had several offerings ranging from brochures and flyers to video presentations on JIS programmes and one-on-one interactions with students.
Other organisations taking part in the event included the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Media Technology Institute (MTI) and the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI).
