The Full Story

The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has organised a week of activities to mark World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on March 15 under the theme: ‘Making the Digital Marketplace Fairer: Access, Security and Protection.’

Activities got underway on March 11 with a church service at the New Beulah Moravian Church in Mandeville in collaboration with the National Consumers League (NCL).

Speaking with JIS NEWS, Chief Executive Officer at the CAC, Dolsie Allen, said the week will be informative and includes displays at parish libraries, in Falmouth square in association with the Trelawny Chamber of Commerce, and at the Yallahs High School in St. Thomas.

Outreach officers will also conduct presentations at various schools, churches and business places.

The week will be highlighted by a seminar and mini-expo at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston on March 15 from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

“This will involve presentations from experts, professionals, legislators and service providers, discussing the impact of the digital marketplace on the lives of consumers in terms of access, security and protection,” Mrs. Allen said.

Attendees will include members of the CAC board and executive; students from high schools and tertiary institutions; micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs); ministries, agencies and departments; and non-government organisations.

Mrs. Allen informed that the seminar will explore a number of issues including protecting consumers from security and privacy violations when conducting electronic transactions; cross-border redress, when providers reside in another jurisdiction; issues pertaining to data protection; as well as unreliable internet service and broadband connections.

The event will be broadcast live on radio and streamed on the CAC’s website.
