Cable & Wireless Donates $10 Million to Repair Police Stations

Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited has presented $10 million to the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR), to effect repairs to Police stations islandwide.
The cheque was handed over to Minister of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips today (February 18), at the Ministry in Kingston.
Accepting the cheque, Dr. Phillips noted that the donation would go a far way to assist in post Hurricane Ivan reconstruction efforts at police stations across the island.
He thanked the telecommunications company for the funds, noting that the donation once again established the clear commitment of Cable and Wireless to Jamaica and the well-being of Jamaicans.
The Minister said the assistance would help members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), to more effectively deal with the challenge of the country’s crime situation.
“We are facing tremendous needs as far as the state of our Police facilities are concerned, as well as a challenge in respect of the general security situation and this challenge will be most effectively met when we have the members of the JCF feeling good about the circumstances in which they work,” he said.
Some 79 Police stations have been identified for repairs and work on these stations will be prioritized, based on the extent of the damage.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the ONR, Danville Walker thanked Cable and Wireless for its donation, and expressed the hope that it would encourage other corporate entities to assist in repair efforts being carried out across the island by the ONR.
“We hope that your example triggers additional response where it is needed,” he added.
Executive Deputy Vice Chairman of Cable and Wireless, Lord Robertson pointed out that the company’s contribution was not new, but was a continuation of the organisation’s contribution to the Jamaican economy and people. “We intend to remain here and continue serving Jamaica. Cable & Wireless will not miss the opportunities that we have to make this country be at the sharp edge of the communication and technological revolution and to give it a competitive advantage in the global economy,” he said.
