Cable and Wireless Hands Over Generator to Blood Bank

Cable and Wireless Jamaica has made another contribution to the on-going Hurricane relief effort, with the handing over of a generator to the National Blood Transfusion Services on Slipe Pen Road in Kingston, yesterday (October 6).
Handing over the unit, President of Cable and Wireless Jamaica, Jacqueline Holding said the donation was another demonstration of the entity’s “commitment to active involvement in the affairs that affect the well-being” of the country.
“Giving back to the community is a Cable and Wireless tradition and through the efforts of the Cable and Wireless Jamaica Foundation, Jamaica can expect to see our company remain a sensitive and active partner in the efforts to build a better Jamaica,” Mrs. Holding said.
The President said she was impressed by the resolve displayed by Jamaicans in the continuing post Ivan restoration efforts.
Expressing optimism for the prospects of Jamaica as a country and the future of Cable and Wireless, she assured that the entity, which has been in Jamaica for more than 100 years, would remain the dynamic leader in telecommunications, ensuring that Jamaica’s facilities remain on par with the best worldwide.
Accepting the donation, Health Minister, John Junor congratulated Cable and Wireless for its continued contribution to the country and the Health Ministry. Furthermore, he said the entity was acknowledged for its response, as telecommunication was an integral component of the disaster management process. “Cable and Wireless really came through for us,” the Minister said. Mr. Junor pointed out that during the hurricane, there was loss of some 100 units of blood, 130 units of blood products and reagents amounting to nearly US$38,000, due to a malfunctioning generator.
The Minister said he welcomed the new unit, which would give the blood bank full capacity, and would help to make the blood supply of the country more secure.
Cable and Wireless and staff members have also contributed cash to the Hurricane Ivan Relief Fund.
