Cabinet Gives Nod to Jamaican Policy Against Doping in Sports

Cabinet has given approval for the establishment of the Jamaican Policy Against Doping in Sports, in furtherance of Jamaica’s continued efforts to eradicate doping in sports locally and internationally, involving local athletes.
Information Minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman made the announcement yesterday (May 16) at the weekly post Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
“What this policy calls us to do, is to ensure that the codes which apply internationally against doping are applied here in Jamaica and it will be accepted and applied by all the sporting bodies.clubs, teams, associations, leagues and participants in any capacity, in any activity, organized, held, convened or authorized by a national event organization,” Senator Whiteman explained.
The policy incorporates the mandatory and other portions of the World Anti-doping Code, the mandatory international standards and the models of best practice. The mandatory international standards contain much of the technical details necessary for implementing the Code, while the models of best practice provide state-of-the-art solutions in different areas of anti-doping.
Cabinet also approved the establishment of interim committees to carry out the different functions required by Jamaica in relation to its being a signatory to the world anti-doping programme.
“This is all in the interest of ensuring that we preserve our international reputation and status in the different fields of sport,” Senator Whiteman said. He also noted that legislation would be prepared in due time to support the Policy.
