The Full Story

The Comprehensive Resort Upgrading Programme is on track to begin as early as next week; with Cabinet awarding contracts to a number of consultants to provide planning services for the upgrading and improvement of the island’s three major resort towns.
Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, who made the disclosure at the (Nov. 21) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, said that the programme, which will be carried out in Negril, Montego Bay on Gloucester Avenue, and Ocho Rios, will entail the preparation of plans for the creation of resort towns with aesthetic appeal, unique features and infrastructure, and conveniences to accommodate visitors and locals.
He informed that the contracts for the resort towns of Negril and Ocho Rios have been awarded to Harold Morrison/Robert Woodstock and Sasaki Associates in the sums of US$1,059,435 and US$1,065,970 respectively, while the contract for Montego Bay has been awarded to P.A Government Services Incorporated in the sum of US$429,038.00.
The contractors have 50 weeks to complete the services for Negril and Ocho Rios, while the overall project should not exceed 68 weeks for completion, Minister Bartlett said.
The key objectives of the programme, the Minister explained are: to identify options for new and expanded product development based on the special, natural and cultural resources within the identified areas; to determine how resort offerings should be upgraded and diversified; to improve the image of the resort towns and to enhance visitor satisfaction; providing more things to see and do and provide better orientation for visitors.
The programme will also seek to outline the basic facilities and infrastructure improvements required to increase the marketability of those resort areas and to develop an overall theme for each locality.
