Cabinet Approves US$18 Million Contract to Improve Water Supply

Twenty-six facilities that supply water to areas of Kingston and St. Andrew, will soon be improved and rehabilitated, following Cabinet's approval of a US$18 million contract to Kier Construction Limited.

This was disclosed by Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, at a Jamaica House press briefing, at the Office of the Prime Minister, in Kingston.

She noted that some of the works to be undertaken include the replacement of the existing pumping equipment with new pumps and motors to satisfy the current and projected water demands for the water supply systems; the replacement of existing well pumping equipment with new pumps and motors; and the upgrading of inadequate water supply transmission lines.

Other works include the installation of chlorination facilities, including equipment, controls and safety equipment to treat raw well water; and civil and structural rehabilitation works required for the rehabilitation of the existing reservoirs, including Montgomery Corner and Chancery Hall reservoirs.

The Minister noted that the facilities which will be affected are at Kirkland Heights, Brentwood, Sterling Castle, Havendale Well No. 2 and the Ferry Hill reservoirs.

The projects are being funded by the Government, with financial assistance from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
