Cabinet has approved the award of a contract valued at $21.6 million to the Jamaica Ultimate Tyre Company Limited to provide over 1,000 tyres for the Rapid Response Unit of the Water and Housing Ministry.
Making the disclosure at Monday’s (January 17) post Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Information Minister Senator Burchell Whiteman said the purchase of tyres in that quantity was to ensure spares for quick replacement as needed.
He pointed out that the Ministry was concerned that its Rapid Response fleet should be optimally available to provide services to institutions, individuals and areas when there were problems with the regular water supply.
Informing that 20 of the 100 Rapid Response trucks were out of service because of lack of tyres or mechanical problems, Senator Whiteman said that the purchase would help to put some of them back on the road.
He also assured that the mechanical problems would be addressed, noting that Water and Housing Minister, Donald Buchanan was confident that the entire fleet would be functional soon. Funding for the venture will come from the internal revenues of the Ministry.
Meanwhile, Cabinet also gave its approval for the name of the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) to be changed to Companies Office of Jamaica (COJ).
The ORC is an executive agency with responsibility for the administration of companies, registration of business names and the implementation of the Industrial and Provident Societies Act.
Senator Whiteman explained that the name change served to create an important distinction between the ORC and the Registrar General’s Department and improve the general profile of the company.
