The Full Story

Cabinet has approved the award of a contract to Racar Ingeniros, C.A (Racar), in the sum of US$2,496,830.77, for the restoration and refurbishing of the Port Maria Civic Centre (Phase 2), in the parish of St. Mary.
The project is being executed under the San Jose Accord, and will continue the restoration and refurbishing of the Port Maria Civic Centre, which began in late 1999.
This was disclosed by Minister of Information and Development, Donald Buchanan, at the weekly post Cabinet press briefing held at Jamaica House, yesterday (July 23).
The Urban Development Corporation (UDC), acting as the implementing agency on behalf of the Government, will provide project management and technical services.
“The redevelopment of the Port Maria Civic Centre is part of the overall thrust of the Government to provide cultural centres islandwide that will showcase Jamaica’s cultural heritage at the community level, and attract both local and foreign visitors,” Mr. Buchanan said.
He added that the land to be utilized is being held by the St. Mary Parish Council on behalf of the Manning’s Trust.
Phase one of the project was completed with funding by the government and the Venezuelan Investment Fund, now the Bank of Economic Social Development of Venezuela.
This phase involved the renovation of the front section of the building to allow for limited use of the facility. Phase two of the project will see further restoration of the Old Court House building and the old prison cells.
“The scope of work consists of the restoration of the Old Court House building in Port Maria and some new construction. The existing building is a two storey structure of load bearing brick and some new masonry construction,” Mr. Buchanan noted.
