Cabinet Approves Contract for Passenger Processing System for Airport

Cabinet has approved the award of a US$4,503,098 contract for the supply and implementation of a common user Passenger Processing System for the Norman Manley International Airport.
< Minister of Information and Development, Hon. Donald Buchanan made the announcement at the weekly post Cabinet press briefing held at Jamaica House on February 19. Mr. Buchanan informed that the system would be supplied by SETA, an international provider of communications and information technology solutions to the transport industry. "The system will provide the means for the Norman Manley International Airport to operate on a new model, which will have a 100 per cent shared system environment, using airport owned and maintained common user passenger processing system, and a common use distribution information network," explained the Minister. "This contrasts with the traditional preparatory airport tenant operating relations, which have existed up to now and which will be discontinued," he added. Mr. Buchanan pointed out that the system has been benchmarked against international standards, and would greatly facilitate passengers and other users of the Airport. In the meantime, the Minister also announced that the Human Resource Council submitted for Cabinet's approval, a (Jamaica country) report on the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children. He informed that the report would be submitted both to the United Nations Secretary General and the United States (US) Congress for study and action. "One of the anticipated outcomes of the filing of this report with the United States Congress, is that Jamaica, which is now placed in Tier Two in terms of the compliance with the US minimum standards in this area of trafficking in persons, will be changed to Tier One, which is when you are in compliance with all of the minimum standards of the United States," explained Mr. Buchanan. Recently, both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed the Trafficking in Persons Bill, which will provide for the prevention of human trafficking, especially of women and girls, and punish those involved in such acts.
