Cabinet has approved the award of a contract to M and M Jamaica Limited in the sum of $119.46 million for the construction of a new Primary School at Hellshire, St. Catherine, under the Primary Education Support Project (PESP).
This was announced by Minister of Information and Development, Donald Buchanan, at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing, held at Jamaica House on (Aug. 14).
He informed that the work would include the construction of four two- storey classroom blocks, wheel chair ramp to classroom blocks, new fencing, all purpose hard court, football/playing field, vendor alcove, flag pole, school sign, driveway, parking areas and associated works.
“The structures to be constructed consist mainly of reinforced concrete foundations, columns, suspended floor slab, roof slab and concrete block walls rendered and painted, decorative block panels, fixed concrete louvres and aluminium jalousie windows, timber doors throughout, joinery fixtures and fittings, electrical and plumbing installation,” explained Mr. Buchanan.
He pointed out that part of the proceeds of the civil works component of the PESP is earmarked for the construction of two new, five whole or partial replacements and extension to five primary schools in the parishes of St. Andrew, St. Mary, St. Elizabeth, Manchester, Westmoreland and Hanover.
The Project is jointly financed by the Government and the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB) and is aimed at improving the quality of primary education in Jamaica.
