Cabinet Approves Contract for Container Billing and Collection System

Cabinet has approved the award of a contract for the Kingston Container Terminal billing and collection system to Belgium based company, Cosmos N.V., in the sum of US$370,000.

Making the announcement at yesterday’s (November 29) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Information Minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman explained that this was done, “in pursuance of the Port Authority’s efforts to improve the port facilities to continue to meet international standards and in anticipation of the market demand, which is increasing all the time”.

He added that the intention was that this system would facilitate, not just the collection of dues and fees, but also “the proper placement and deployment of containers and in fact create a seamless system between billing, receipt and the movement of containers”.

Cosmos is an Information Communication Technology (ICT) solutions provider for ports and terminals worldwide.

The project of supplying, installing, training and customizing the system will be completed within four to six months for phase one, and a further three months for phase two.

Cabinet also approved the award of contracts for the provision of security services for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company’s properties, as well as for the provision of insurance services at a cost of more than $24.8 million, and $145.3 million, respectively.

The security contract has been awarded to Atlas Protection Limited for a period of one year, while the contract for the provision of insurance services was awarded to Guardian Insurance Brokers for a period of two years.
