A Committee headed by Professor Rex Nettleford has been appointed by Cabinet to review the system for the awarding of national honours and awards.
Other members of the committee are Dr. Oswald Harding; Professor Barry Chavannes; Professor Verene Shepherd; Mrs. Jean Barnes; Mrs. Madge Barrett; Mrs. Seraj Lakasing; Mr. Merrick Needham; Mr. Easton Lee and Mr. Hugh Nash.
Speaking at the (October 23) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange said that the team will also be required to make recommendations on the changes that may be necessary to preserve and enhance the value of national awards, while ensuring that the appropriate recognition is given to those who render outstanding service to the nation. The committee has been mandated to, among other things, expand the existing categories of award; introduce a new category of award for groups; establish a more detailed criteria for the selection of awardees in each category; limit the number of awards that may be made in each category; incorporate a system of parish awards with appropriate categories to service rendered at the local level; and to accord the appropriate titles to recipients of high honours.
Miss Grange noted that the team will be required to submit a report within the next three months “so that such legislative changes that may be necessary can be made in time for the selection and announcement of awardees at Independence 2008”.
