The Full Story

United States Ambassador to Jamaica, Sue Cobb is encouraging greater community ties between South Florida and Jamaica with the recent launch of her Building Bridges Initiative in Miami.
At the launch, the Ambassador outlined 11 initiatives dubbed, ‘Building Bridges: The Florida-Jamaica Connection’, which were aimed at stimulating programmes and plans in various areas of on-going economic interest and mutual understanding.
Programmes will be developed in the areas of trade, business, law enforcement, health, education and volunteerism, while others are under consideration.
Mrs. Sue Cobb said the venture would also include knowledge sharing and contacts among Jamaica’s and Florida’s public and private sectors and non-governmental bodies.
Building Bridges will encompass a yearlong series of events through September next year, in South Florida and Jamaica, to carry through this outreach initiative.
The Ambassador told the audience, which included business and civic leaders as well as representatives of non-governmental groups in Jamaica and Florida, that “she intends for this partnership to be efficient in order to get things done”, and also to help the island’s development.
She mentioned that her priority over the next year was to expand the many links between Florida and Jamaica by building bridges in the areas outlined in her initiative. This effort, she said, was intended to “capitalize on our unique geographic proximity by facilitating contacts and working relationships and creating new opportunities that will prove mutually beneficial to both countries.”
In attendance were Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, K.D. Knight and Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, Ricardo Allicock. In brief remarks, both expressed full support and cooperation for the Building Bridges programme, which will help in the country’s national development.
