The Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) has upped its oversight operations at the Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL) in Rockfort, State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce, Senator Kern Spencer said yesterday (December 1).
Making his contribution to the State of the Nation Debate in the Senate, he said that as part of improved preventive measures which were being undertaken at the cement company, the Bureau “has now tightened its monitoring and testing regime to involve a weekly and eventually twice weekly check of the product”.
The State Minister also informed the Upper House that further steps were afoot to pursue measures designed to ensure the recertification of CCCL under the National Certification Mark Programme.
According to Mr. Spencer, this would ensure that the company and its customers benefit from this quality assurance designation.
These recent initiatives mandated by the Ministry, the Senator said, comes against the background of “the crisis in the cement industry”, triggered by the recall of all cement produced by CCCL between February 19 and 25 this year.
