The Full Story

In an effort to continue its programme of enhancing competitiveness amongst Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Scientific Research Council (SRC). This according to Ministry Paper 38, which was tabled in the House of Representatives on Wednesday (June 1) by Minister of Commerce Science and Technology, Phillip Paulwell.
The MoU has forged a partnership between the two agencies that will ensure synergy in the development of national capacity in the areas of science, metrology, testing and technology transfer. “The partnership will utilize the scientific and technological expertise of both institutions to ensure that processes and products conform to standards that are competitive,” the report stated.
This new strategic alliance will benefit the export competitiveness of Jamaican products, which is very timely as both the SRC and the BSJ are agencies that form part of the core team for the National Export Strategy. Sustainable inter agency coordination and teamwork will be critical for the success of this project and the country’s economic development.
In the meantime a MoU was also signed between the Mona Institute of Applied Sciences (MIAS) and the BSJ in the fields of standardization, metrology, testing, and research and information, to create a synergy of accelerated development of national capacity and capability.
The areas of cooperation includes an exchange of information in areas of mutual interest, sharing of technical information to advance the work and interest of each institution, identification and pursuit of research projects of mutual, national or regional interest or benefit as well as support for utilization of existing equipment, and capability or infrastructure by both institutions.
