British Government Donates Texts to Schools

The British Government has donated 150 physical education textbooks to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.
British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Peter Mathers, handed over the books to Assistant Chief Education Officer, Phyllis Reynolds and the Education Officer responsible for Physical Education, Dr. Joyce Graham-Royal at the High Commission on Trafalgar Road in Kingston yesterday (Nov.11).
The books are the first of its kind to be used in Jamaica’s education system and will be incorporated into the secondary school curriculum. They are considered to be user friendly and will be used for the teaching of science and social studies in addition to physical education.
Mrs. Reynolds, in thanking the British Government, informed that the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) would be administering the first ever physical education examination next year and the texts should prove helpful to students sitting the test.
Institutions slated to sit students for the examinations would be given first consideration in the distribution of the texts, Dr. Graham-Royal stated.
Mr. Mathers expressed the hope that the texts would be used in the holistic education of the students. “When educating people, you educate them holistically”, he stated.
The books were supplied free of cost by the Foreign and Commonwealth office.
