Breakdown of Relationships Linked to Crime – Dr. Holness

February 28, 2005

The Full Story

Dr. Patricia Holness, Chief Executive Officer of the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) has said that the breakdown in relationships was directly related to the level of crime and violence, which was affecting the nation, communities and homes.

“At the centre of all the harm being carried out in the society is the break-down in relationships. Mothers no longer love children, fathers no longer love sons, wives no longer respect husbands and husbands no longer love wives as they are instructed to do by the word of God”, she said.

“When the Bible says ‘husbands love your wives as Christ loves the Church and gave himself for it’, that’s a very outstanding statement. We would really love if our relationships in every quarter and every section of society would just blossom and be revived in 2005”, she noted.

The CEO was speaking at the Agency’s eighth annual Prayer Breakfast held last Friday (February 25) at the Head Office in Twickenham Park, St. Catherine, under the theme: ‘Relationships Come Alive in 2005.’

“The theme for this event was inspired by the observed need to touch lives and renew relationships, that span parents and children, husbands and wives, employers and employees,” she said.

During the year, 2005, she posited, Jamaicans must place much needed emphasis on rebuilding relationships. “We must put the family, friendships and our relationship with God at the forefront. We ought to support these relationships so they can come alive”, she stated.

According to Dr. Holness, the RGD was very proud of the role it has played in touching lives and renewing relationships.

“I recall only a few months ago, through our Genealogical Research Service, we were able to reunite a father and daughter, who had lost touch for over 30 years and a mother and son, who had not seen each other for over 12 years. The headline in the paper for the story was ‘RGD Touches Lives”, she pointed out.

Dr. Holness encouraged those present at the event, to proceed in like manner, and renew and strengthen relationships with those around them.

“Seek out that family member whom you have not met for a long time. Seek out that wayward son whom you have given up on, because God is not through with him. Seek out that boy who is on drugs and seep into his spirit the word of life, the word of God that can resurrect life from the dead”, she urged.

“I would wish that we would make a special effort to touch the lives we are acquainted with, to touch those we are far from, with whom we have not made arrangements to meet, and may God bless us to do so this year”, she said.
