Blood Donors to be Recognised Today

Fifteen persons and one organization will be recognised by the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) and the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) for their high level of commitment to voluntary blood donation.
A presentation ceremony is scheduled to take place on Blood Donor Day (June 14) at the NBTS on Slipe Pen Road starting at 10:00 a.m., with the Minister of Health, John Junor in attendance.
Sandra Brown, Communications Officer at the NBTS, told JIS News that the selections were made on the basis of total blood donations, the willingness of persons to recruit other donors, and to highlight the importance of giving blood.
The honourees include nine persons nominated by the blood collection centres across the island. They are: Gavin Atkinson, Cornwall Regional Hospital Blood Collection Centre; Patrick Brooks, National Chest Hospital; Karen DaSilva, May Pen Hospital; Ainsworth Edmond, Port Antonio Hospital; Ainsel Lee, NBTS; Delroy Lofteif, Savanna-La-Mar Hospital; Yohance Rodriguez, University Hospital of the West Indies; Debra Treasure, St. Ann’s Bay Hospital; and, Eric Wilson, Mandeville Hospital.
Three persons will be rewarded for making significant contributions to the promotion of voluntary blood donations. They are Odean Black of Cornwall Regional Hospital Blood Collection Centre and retired blood drive organisers, Isabel Magnus and Carva Crawford.A special award will be given to the University of the West Indies for having the largest blood collection drive last year.
PAHO will also use the occasion to recognise persons, who have donated to its annual collection drive since 2001.
Ms. Brown said that the NBTS would use the event to introduce its newest private sector partner, Glaxo Smith Kline Caribbean Limited, a research-based pharmaceutical giant, which has been supporting the efforts of the NBTS since the start of the year.World Blood Donor Day is being observed under the theme: ‘Celebrating Your Gift of Blood’.
