The Full Story

Cabinet has given approval for a Bill entitled the Charities Act 2013, to be tabled in Parliament.

The purpose of the Bill is to introduce a single piece of legislation to regulate all charitable organisations, whether intending to, or already operating in the country. It will also establish a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for that purpose.

Speaking at a Jamaica House press briefing on September 18, Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, said the Act will facilitate the registration, regulation, administration and governance of the private voluntary sector operating in Jamaica.

The Bill will also provide a definition for charitable organisations and the designation of the Registrar of charitable organisations by the responsible Minister, which will keep and maintain a register of all registered charitable organisations.
