Beach Clean-Up in Portland Today

September 20, 2003

The Full Story

Cleaning up activities will be conducted on a number of beaches in Portland today as the parish observes International Beach Clean Up Day.
The effort will be spearheaded by the Portland Environment Protection Association (PEPA), in collaboration with the National Environmental Societies Trust and the United States Peace Corps, with funding from the Canadian Green Fund.
Marguerite Gauron, President PEPA, told JIS News that 16 beaches will be involved in the exercise, including Bryan’s Bay; Snow Hill; Ennis Bay; College of Agriculture, Science and Education; Hope Bay; Buff Bay; St. Margaret’s Bay; Rodney Hall and the Port Antonio East Harbour. She informed the garbage collected would be sorted for recycling and disposal.
Mrs. Gauron said the clean up effort has wide community support with fishermen, students, members of emergency services, as well as representatives of several citizens associations, indicating their participating.
Expressing confidence that the initiative would be a success, Mrs. Gauron said it was incumbent on other communities in Portland to ensure that the example was emulated in order to complement other efforts aimed at keeping the parish clean.
