Basic School to be Constructed at Woodhall in Clarendon

The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) is to provide $7.4 million for the construction of a basic school in the Woodhall community of Clarendon.The contract signing and ground-breaking ceremony was held at the St. Luke’s Anglican Church in May Pen on December 8.
Speaking at the ceremony, Grace Ann Miller, Human Resource Manager at JSIF said that funding for the project was provided after a request was made by the Parent Teachers’ Association.
“Financing for the project is being provided by the World Bank under the National Community Development Project (NCDP),” the Manager pointed out.
The project involves the construction of four classrooms, a sick bay and staff room. Furniture and equipment will be provided, including 20 desks and 60 chairs for the students, two desks and chairs for the teachers, two filing cabinets, 20 desks, a refrigerator, and a gas stove.
Miss Miller explained that the community is expected to clear the site and do the landscaping, provide furniture for two classrooms, provide security, foot the bill for water and electricity during construction, and also incur the cost for planning and catering of all project related ceremonies.
She pointed out that the community’s contribution should amount to about 11 per cent of the total cost of the project.
About 107 students and staff are expected to benefit from the project. Construction is expected to last for four months.
