Arts and Culture Jamaica Announces 2004 Scholarship Recipients

Arts and Culture Jamaica Inc., a Canadian organization dedicated to promoting the “unique arts and culture of Jamaica”, has announced the recipients of its 2004 scholarship awards, ranging from CDN$500 to $1000.
The recipients are all of Jamaican heritage attending tertiary institutions in Toronto, Canada, and have satisfied the criteria of demonstrating artistic abilities and pursuing full-time study in the fields of Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Design, Literature or other cultural forms.
They are Angela James, a fourth-year Drama student at York University; Andrea Black, a second-year Visual Arts/Psychology student, also studying at York University; Delroy Dixon, a first-year Graphic Design student at Seneca College; and Byron Beckford and Coldeta McCarthy, both first-year dance students at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre.
This is the second year that the organization is issuing scholarships. Last year, the first recipient was 20 year-old Journalism student, Sarah Sheppard, who was born in Canada of Jamaican parentage.
Arts and Culture Jamaica was formed more than 10 years ago to showcase and expose Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage to the Canadian community, promote pride of culture to children born in Canada of Jamaican heritage, and encourage intercultural communication through the arts.
The organization does this through the promotion of book launches and readings by authors, art and photography exhibitions, and concerts.
“In promoting these talented individuals, we show the positive accomplishments of Jamaican nationals and Canadians of Jamaican heritage and their contribution to the arts,” said President, Paula de Ronde.
Jamaica’s Ambassador of Culture, Hon. Dr. Louise Bennett-Coverley and Jamaica’s Consul General to Toronto, Vivia Betton serve as patrons.
