By: , June 6, 2013

The Full Story

The National Works Agency (NWA) will undertake additional river training works along the Yallahs River in St. Thomas, at a cost of US$270,000 this year.

This was disclosed by State Minister for Transport, Works and Housing, Hon. Richard Azan, during his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House on June 5.

“In addition, the Ministry will conduct maintenance and improvements through the use of gabion, bunding and desilting works on waterways at Castleton, St. Mary,” he informed, adding that river training works have been completed along the Port Henderson Road in St. Catherine.

Mr. Azan also noted that sea defence works have started and are to be ramped up at Annotto Bay, St. Mary and between Buff Bay and Orange Bay in Portland.

“Of particular significance, is the fact that the Ministry will, during Financial Year 2013/14, be partnering with LASCO, to effect river training works on the section of the Rio Cobre at White Marl in St. Catherine, adjacent to LASCO’s Industrial Complex,” he informed.

The State Minister noted that these activities are part of the Government’s efforts to protect the country’s road infrastructure against the damage caused by adverse weather events, such as hurricanes and tropical storms.

“The Ministry takes very seriously its responsibility to undertake flood control and mitigation as a vital preventive mechanism that enhances road safety for the Jamaican people,” Mr. Azan said.
