The Full Story

Member of Parliament for North East St. Catherine, Gregory Mair, has called for increased action on justice reform and the recommendations from the strategic review of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), as part of efforts to tackle crime and violence.

Member of Parliament for North East St. Catherine, Mr. Gregory Mair.

“Let us do it now.The reform of the police force and the justice system has already been laid out. It is about time that we start acting on the recommendations in a speedy manner,” he told the House of Representatives yesterday (June 9) in his contribution to the 2010/11 Sectoral Debate.
In the meantime, he said that a purposeful approach must be taken to “free” communities that are considered garrisons.
“It is not only Tivoli Gardens that needs help and attention but also we need to look at communities like Rockfort, Southside, Tel Aviv, High Rise, Rema, Trench Town, Maxfield Avenue, Marl Road, Calaloo Bed, among others,” he suggested.
Mr. Mair pointed out, however, that these communities must be given the assurance that the justice system will better serve them, and that there will be social intervention, respect for their human rights, and opportunity for advancement.
“I would like to see the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition, hand in hand, start the process of dismantling garrisons in all these communities.let us get together all 60 of us, and free these communities in the nation’s interest, but let us ensure that, in the process, the state fills the vacuum that will be left,” he stated.
He also called on the private sector and the church to participate in the process of social reform, and lead by example.
