$84 Million Contract to Protect Roselle Road in St. Thomas

Cabinet has approved an $84 million contract to Coast to Coast Quarries Limited for the supply and delivery of boulders for revetment works at Roselle, St. Thomas.

The supply and delivery of boulders fall under the Inter-American Development Bank transportation infrastructure rehabilitation programme.

Speaking at the Jamaica House media briefing on July 18, Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, said the contract will last for a six-week period and is a continuation of revetment works to protect critical areas along the exposed 1.3 kilometres of coastline.

She said the proposed revetment work is to ultimately protect the coastline by placing river shingle and various size boulders conforming to drawings and specifications.

“This will significantly reduce damage along the Roselle main road caused by wave actions from Tropical Storms and therefore will improve mobility, road safety and will reduce the travel time between Yallahs and Morant Bay,” she added.

It will also facilitate greater access for farmers to transport their produce and also critical linkages for the development and renewal of the tourism business in the affected communities.

The contract was also approved by the Ministry of Finance and Planning and the National Contracts Commission.
