The Full Story

The Government is to spend $695 million in the 2017-18 fiscal year to enhance Jamaica’s Energy Efficiency (EE) and Energy Conservation (EC) measures in the public sector.

The money has been set aside in the 2017-18 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.

Implemented by the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology, it is anticipated that the measures will enable the implementation of an energy efficiency/conservation baseline awareness survey; the establishment of a National Energy Efficiency Institute and the development of national guidelines for the disposal of hazardous waste.

Recently, Science, Energy and Technology Minister, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, announced that a $30 million Energy Management and Efficiency Programme (EMEP) would be implemented this year and would expand on the achievements of two other major initiatives.

These are the Energy Security Efficiency and Enhancement Project (ESEEP) and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Programme (EECP).

The EMEP will be jointly financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions, among other benefits.
