$66 Million to Promote Technology in Agriculture

A project aimed at developing a technologically driven and modern agricultural sector has been allocated $66.3 million for the 2010/11 financial year.
This is outlined in the 2010/11 Estimates of Expenditure, which is now before the House of Representatives.
As stated under the Improving Jamaica’s Agricultural Productivity Project, the objectives are to increase productivity and sustain production and marketing of high quality products; and to support the adaptation of greenhouse technology.
Achievements up to March 2010 include: the establishment of one greenhouse cluster within 18 greenhouses in St. Elizabeth; construction of one post harvest and packaging facility at Hounslow, in St. Elizabeth; private sector partnerships established; comprehensive training programmes in greenhouse technology for 70 farmers and farm labourers; and a Memorandum of Understanding between the Inter American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, agreed on.
Anticipated targets for the 2010/11 fiscal year include: the installation of 22 commercial greenhouses for one cluster of farmers; establish one post harvest facility at Coleyville in Manchester; and train 13 Extension Officers and 40 greenhouse farmers and farm labourers.
The project is funded by the Government, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and IICA.
