65 Students Get JBA/Area Four Police Scholarships

A total of 65 students from inner city communities in Kingston and St. Andrew have benefited from scholarships totaling $1.3 million under the Jamaica Bankers’ Association (JBA)/Area Four Police Civic Education Scholarship Fund.
The presentations were made at an awards ceremony held on Thursday (September 23) at the Police Officers’ Club on Hope Road.
Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington, congratulated the recipients and encouraged them to excel.
“I want you to spend the next few years justifying this investment, making the very best use of all of this educational opportunity available to you so that those that made the investment.will be proud of you and will be satisfied that you did your best,” he said.
The JBA/Area Four Police Civic Education Scholarship Fund, now in its fifth year, seeks to provide scholarships to children 12 to 18 years, who are in financial need and who reside in the communities in East, Central and West Kingston, and Central and South St. Andrew.
The children are selected based on guidelines established by the Educational Sub-committee of the Area 4 Police Civic Committee.
Mr. Ellington informed that all the recipients over the years have been excelling “and that is one of the things that gave us the impetus to make certain that this programme should never die but if anything, it should grow from strength to strength.”
In expressing congratulations to the recipients, President of JBA, Minna Israel encouraged them to take “full advantage of this opportunity and resist all the temptation and distractions that surround (them).”
