The Full Story

Forty-five National Youth Service (NYS) volunteers in Portland have received certificates after successfully completing a one month training course in clerical and administrative work.
The graduation ceremony was held at the Methodist Church Hall in Port Antonio on Friday, June 1.
The course, which was conducted throughout May, had as it main objective, the sharpening of the preparedness of the volunteers, both for employment and for involvement in business ventures.
Among the subject areas covered were Information Technology, Basic Accounts, Social Studies, Change Management, Personal Development, Mathematics, Gender Sensitization and Leadership.
Giving the main address at the graduation ceremony, Garth Gilmore, Director of Schools Personnel and Administrative Services at the Port Antonio Regional Office of the Ministry of Education, congratulated the volunteers for the success they have achieved in the course and exhorted them to make the best use of the opportunities that would become available as a result of the training they had received.
He reminded them that their training has placed them in an important position from which they could help to influence the process of change needed to transform Jamaica into a more loving and caring nation, worthy of the highest respect and admiration of the global community.
Mr. Gilmore emphasised that there was great need for the graduates to remain strong and well focused in the face of negative distractions which faced them daily, and encouraged them to always aim to achieve excellence in whatever they do.
He encouraged them to regard themselves as winners, having the capability to surmount the challenges which confront them from time to time, and implored them not to allow themselves to be held back by circumstances, but instead to use their resourcefulness and initiative to achieve excellence.
Several of the volunteers told JIS News that they were thankful to the National Youth Service for sponsoring the training programme, and assured that they would use the knowledge gained for the improvement of their own lives and for the betterment of their communities.
