The Construction and Improvement of Court Houses project has been allocated $437 million in the 2008/09 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.
The provision for 2008/09 is to facilitate architectural and mobilization fees for the Mandeville Judicial Complex; refurbishing of the Balaclava and Cambridge Resident Magistrate (RM) Courts, the Supreme Court and the Coroner’s and Traffic Courts in Kingston; establishing a victims shelter in select locations islandwide; the establishment of the Court Services Agency in Kingston and relocation of select offices; expansion of the Barry Street Judicial Complex and the purchasing of equipment for the Court Services Agency, including PBX, cables, UPS, security software, appliances and servers.
Achievements for 2007/08 include the preparation of land to construct the Coroner’s and Traffic Courts; construction of the Petty Sessions Court at Santa Cruz in St. Elizabeth; implementation of court security systems in several courts islandwide; refurbishing of the Kingston Criminal Court, Supreme Court, Yallahs RM Court, Montego Bay RM Court, Spanish Town RM Court and Manchioneal RM Court; conducting a topographical survey for the Mandeville Judicial Complex; purchasing of the UPS and standby generator for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions; and computerization of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Supreme Court Registry.
