$4.69 Million For ODS Project

A total of $4.69 million has been set aside in the 2008/09 Estimates of Expenditure to carry out activities for the sustainable elimination of all Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS), in keeping with Jamaica’s commitment to the Montreal Protocol for the phasing out of ODS.
The money will be used to achieve a number of targets during the period, including the celebration of international ozone day; information exchange with other parties to the Protocol; public awareness and education raising activities; dissemination of information on new technologies and ODS substitutes; and promotion and co-ordination of phase-out actions identified in the country programme.
Other anticipated targets include monitoring and evaluating the progress of implementation of ODS phase out activities; continued liaison between the government and responsible international organizations; reporting progress on country programme implementation to the Multilateral Funding Secretariat; and reporting ODS consumption and production data, exports, and cases of documented illegal trade in ODS to the Ozone Secretariat. The Government of Jamaica is putting up $2.25 million of the total.
In addition to contributing to the elimination of consumption of ODS, the project also aims to maintain the administrative infrastructure needed by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), to comply with the obligations of the Protocol and its amendments.
