366 Civil Servants Honoured at King’s House

In keeping with Civil Service Week celebrations, approximately 366 civil servants were honoured by the Government yesterday (November 24), at King’s House, for their long service to public office in Jamaica.
Those honoured have served for at least 25 years in government ministries and departments.
In the citation read by Camille Drake, Public Relations Consultant, the recipients were thanked for their sense of professionalism, discipline and loyalty throughout the years, and those who would continue to work in public office were encouraged to continue the process of reforming and modernizing the public service.
“You have mastered new techniques to face the challenges which confront Jamaica in the international arena. Your sense of responsibility, resoluteness, courage, dignity, discipline and reliability have allowed you to meet these expectations despite the resource constraints. Your involvement in the reform initiatives aimed at the development of a modern and efficient Public Service, respected by the public for its efficiency, fairness and responsiveness, have been commendable,” the citation noted.
“Some of you are on the threshold of your well-earned retirement and our wish for you is rest and contentment. Others among you must continue the process of reforming and modernizing the public service, which will provide the enabling environment for social and economic development of the country,” the citation added.
Medals and certificates were presented to the awardees by Governor- General, His Excellency the Most. Hon. Sir Howard Cooke; Speaker of the House, Michael Peart, who represented Prime Minister P. J. Patterson; Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Audley Shaw; Custos for St Andrew, Reverend Carmen Stewart, and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Carlton Davies.
Rose Henry, Deputy Financial Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Planning was given the ‘Civil Servant of the Year’ award. Mrs. Henry has been working in the civil service for 38 years.
The Jamaica Regiment Band, the Peacemaker Mento Band and well-known cabaret performer, Dwight Richards entertained and serenaded the recipients.
